Virgin Hotel - Shoreditch

When Virgin Hotels announced they were taking over the former Mondrian Hotel in Shoreditch, we knew something special was about to happen. This wasn’t just another refurbishment—it marked Virgin’s highly anticipated London debut, and they were determined to make a bold, creative statement in the heart of East London.

The transformation of the building at 45 Curtain Road took cues from Shoreditch’s signature gritty-meets-glam energy. Interiors were reimagined to feel playful, stylish, and layered with personality—featuring velvet textures, boucle finishes, custom lighting, and unexpected material pairings. Everything was designed to reflect that unmistakable Virgin spirit: confident, characterful, and a little bit cheeky.

Inside Out was proud to play a part in bringing this vision to life, creating six stunning bespoke furniture designs specifically for the project.

Our team worked closely with the client to develop a design with finishes, fabrics, and silhouettes that echoed the interiors’ bold tone. This included the Shoreditch Dining table and the Maple Groove table, which add a grounded, organic warmth to the space; the Curtain Road table bringing a sophisticated edge with its deep green tone; and the Shoreditch Statement chair was upholstered in rich, saturated red that injected energy and comfort into the lounge areas. The Rocksteady table, with its unique form and textural finish, serves as a sculptural focal point while also delivering practical durability.

Given the project’s short lead time, producing sample pieces wasn’t an option. Instead, we kept the client fully informed throughout production, sharing regular photo updates to maintain visibility and ensure confidence in every stage of the process. In addition, our material expertise proved particularly valuable when the original veneer specified for wall panels and cabinetry was found to be over budget. We were able to provide a more cost-effective wood veneer—used across our bespoke table tops—that not only aligned with the design intent but also allowed the client to maintain visual consistency throughout the space at a fraction of the cost.

It wasn’t just about looks. Every item was built to perform in a busy hospitality setting while maintaining the premium finish and playful elegance that Virgin is known for. The result is a space that’s visually striking, comfortable, and unmistakably Virgin—one that we’re proud to have helped bring to life.
