Each year, Inside Out proudly offers a gap year placement to a design student, believing in the importance of nurturing tomorrow's top talent today. We are always thrilled to play a role in the growth and development of so many budding designers. Rosie Sinclair, one of our recent Design Assistants, has just completed her placement with us and returned to Leeds Beckett University to finish her final year in Product Design. Before she left, we took the opportunity to catch up with her and hear her reflections on the past year. Read her thoughts below—we have no doubt that Rosie is destined for an incredible career in design!
Can you tell us about your degree and what inspired you to choose a course that includes a gap year?
I am currently pursuing a BA in Product Design at Leeds Beckett University, a four-year course that includes a year in industry. What really drew me to this course was the chance to channel my creativity into something practical and impactful, tackling real-world problems. I have always been determined to do a placement year, and after completing it, I am convinced of its significant benefits and why it was such a great decision! Not only have I enhanced my design skills, but I have also experienced personal growth and made invaluable connections in the design world
How has your internship at Inside Out Contracts contributed to your professional development and personal growth?
During my year-long internship at Inside Out Contracts, I have acquired skills in both my professional and personal life. I had the opportunity to work independently on projects, from initial design ideation to photographing the finished bespoke pieces. This provided me with valuable insights into the real-world design process. This experience will benefit me when incorporating these learnings into my final year university projects. When I began my placement in July 2023, I had never used the CAD software before, now as I finish the year, I have created numerous CAD models, sometimes completing two projects a day. I will continue to grow my skills in CAD during my final year of university.
Throughout my year at Inside Out Contracts, I have experienced personal growth in various aspects. Initially, I had concerns about discussing projects with clients and professionals. However, as the year progressed, I gained confidence on the phone, email correspondence, and networking with other designers at work events.
My primary focus as the design intern was on technical drawings, I also had the opportunity to take on various other responsibilities, such as photography visits, site surveys, space planning and creating client presentations. A standout moment in photography was a shoot for Dishoom in Battersea, where Inside Out supplied the furniture for the exterior, bar, and parts of the main restaurant. The space featured a unique retro-futurist aesthetic, blending elements of both Bombay and London, past and future. My task was to capture and convey this story through my photography. As the year went on, I grew more confident in leading and coordinating these shoots, refining my eye for visual storytelling.
Overall, I believe I have emerged from this year as a more confident and knowledgeable person, this is also due to working along side the Senior Designer as I was able to see firsthand how professionals approach design challenges and I was given feedback to help improve my work.
What aspects of working at Inside Out Contracts did you enjoy the most?
Despite the exciting design work and valuable hands-on experience, the people were undoubtedly my favourite aspect of Inside Out. The team is a dynamic mix of characters, making every day enjoyable. From my very first day, everyone welcomed me with open arms, creating a laid-back and supportive environment that I quickly settled into. I have created so many great memories during my time there, and the supportive and vibrant team made every project enjoyable. One of the highlights was the ‘Feasts for International Beasts’ events, where everyone from the company from all diverse backgrounds brought in a signature dish from their culture. Moments like this made the internship so memorable and unique.
How do you feel about entering your final year of university and your future career beyond that?
As I approach my final year of university I feel a mix of emotions. I’m very keen to start my final projects, as my placement at Inside Out Contracts gave me invaluable hands-on experience, solidifying my passion for product design and giving me a clearer sense of direction beyond university. However, it can be quite daunting, especially when preparing for your future career, but having this solid foundation, I now feel much more confident about stepping into the professional world.
