Decorative Details in Hospitality Design: Fringe, Tassels & Trims

Have you ever noticed that it’s often the smallest details that make the biggest impact?

Fringe and tassel detailing are making a confident comeback as part of the retro revival sweeping through hospitality furniture design. From the glamour of the 1920s to the indulgent styling of the 1970s, designers are rediscovering the allure of ornamentation. In decadent, mood-lit environments, these decorative details signal luxury, craftsmanship and confidence. They serve as a tactile reminder of the artistry and hand-crafted work behind each piece.

As Maximalism continues to influence commercial interiors, texture and embellishment are once again being celebrated, with fringe and tassels appearing in a range of venues from boutique hotel lounges to cocktail bars and high-end restaurants.

The Role of Decorative Details in Design

Decorative detailing plays a powerful role in shaping the atmosphere of a space. It can add contrast, character and a sense of luxury which helps to express a brand’s personality through its interiors.

In boutique hotels and independent restaurants, these small touches create a feeling of warmth and individuality. A sense that something has been made with care.

At Inside Out Contracts, we have worked closely with venue owners and design teams who want to use details like fringe, trims, studs and piping to add that final layer of polish. These custom finishes, along with the upholstery selection can help to transform a piece of furniture into something that is uniquely distinctive and reinforces the venue’s personality.

Different furniture types lend themselves to different decorative approaches, as each type is handled and used differently.

Lounge chairs can feature soft fringe or tassel accents that add movement and richness near the base. Bar stools, which if placed at a bar, can endure heavy use, benefit from detailing along on the back or edges e.g areas that are visible but protected from too much handling and wear. Formal dining chairs tend to favour subtle studwork or tonal piping to outline their curves and highlight upholstery craftsmanship.

However, it's our Marshmallow Stools, though small in scale that often become the most expressive pieces. We have a range of wonderful examples of how these stools can be made to look so individual. From a long rich fringe detailing, to decorative studs and high-contrast piping, these stools show that even the smallest furniture can define the mood and character of a space.

We have also created custom made tables with contrasting materials and worked with a range of detailed edging. From high-contrast borders or combinations such as wood with slate, these combinations can create a finish that helps to tie a hospitality scheme together.

Design Techniques and Materials

Every decorative element serves a purpose. Fringe and tassels can introduce movement and texture. These decorative details are best used on the bases of sofas, stools or lounge chairs where they can be admired but not overhandled.

Piping and trims, by contrast, define the shape of furniture and draw attention to the craftsmanship of the upholstery. Stud detailing offers a timeless, tailored look that works beautifully in refined hospitality spaces such as bars and members’ clubs.

Upholstery that works well with these details include rich, tactile materials like velvet, chenille or boucle for fringe and trims, while leather and faux leather provide a striking contrast when used with studs or metallic edging.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Even the most striking decorative feature can lose its impact if not used thoughtfully. Our design team always advises balance as too many details can compete with one another. Like everything decadent, moderation is key.

It's also important to note that fringe detailing should be kept clear of the floor so it doesn’t get caught or damaged.

Maintenance and Durability

Decorative trims may look delicate, but with the right care they can remain beautiful for years. Regular dusting or gentle vacuuming keeps fringe and tassels looking their best, and spot-cleaning with mild upholstery products helps preserve colour and texture. Avoid harsh chemicals or soaking, as these can damage bindings and finishes.

As our design team notes, trims should be treated as part of the upholstery and looked after carefully.

Project Highlights

Some of our favourite Inside Out projects show just how effective thoughtful detailing can be. The Evelyn Steakhouse in Dallas uses fringe-detailed lounge chairs to soften the bold geometry of the space.

At Schloss Roxburghe, studded Adele Bar Stools bring a classic, tailored aesthetic to a grand interior. Meanwhile, at Paddy’s Sportsbook in the Hippodrome, brass-edged tabletops add a sense of precision and polish to a high-energy venue.

Each of these spaces feels distinct and each owes part of its atmosphere to those small but important details that elevate furniture from functional to unforgettable.
